We hope youre managing to stay warm
this winter, it sure has been nippy.
Have you noticed that as we get deeper into winter just
how serious we are taking ourselves?
I think its both normal and healthy that we should
look for humour in our daily lives and especially in
the winter time. Why not share a joke with someone;
you may just make their day more enjoyable and its
even better if you can give folks a smile. The thing
with smiles is that they are more contagious than the
common cold and smiles can be the perfect
antidote for a depressing mood - so go on, start sharing
a smile - you can be sure youll get one back.
Looking on the bright side
The winter season is a lovely time of year in both of
our shops because often customers like to stay a while
in the warm and have a chat.
One
of the best sides to our job is when this happens and
one such day in June I met Joan (pictured here). Needless
to say our topic of conversation was food and it soon
became clear that Joan is very adventurous with food.
As we chatted Joan shared some of her Pate and
Pesto recipes, her Chicken Parcels with Orange Sauce
and her Pork and Tamarillo Casserole thats
one of her husbands favourites.
Now, Joan, this lovely lady who made my mouth water
with her gourmet recipes, will soon be celebrating her
80th birthday How good is that AT EIGHTY to still
be so adventurous with food and have the desire to create
and enjoy. This month were featuring a take on
one of Joans recipes - Chicken and Tamarillo
Casserole.
Thank you so much for sharing Joan, were looking
forward to our next chat.

Seasonal veggies: Potatoes - The good
old 'Spud'
Potatoes contain vitamins and minerals that have
been identified as vital to our nutrition. A medium
potato with the skin provides vitamin C, Potassium and
trace amounts of B vitamins, magnesium, phosphorus,
iron, and zinc.
The fibre content of a potato with skin
equals that of many whole grain breads, pastas, and
cereals. Nutritionally, potatoes are best known for
their carbohydrate content. The predominant form of
this carbohydrate is starch. The nutrients of the potato
are distributed between the flesh and the skin.
The way potatoes are cooked can significantly
affect their nutrient value. Almost all the protein
content of a potato is contained in a thin layer just
under its skin. This is can be seen when the skin of
a boiled potato is carefully peeled; it appears as a
yellowish film. To get the most from the good old spud,
this valuable dietary source of protein, potatoes are
best consumed whole, or peeled after cooking.
Potatoes are usually classified as high
on the glycemic index (GI) and are often excluded from
the diets of those trying to follow a "low GI"
diet (especially if they are dressed with lashings
of butter and cheese).
Try red potatoes for a change, they look
and taste superb, and are featured in our recipe for
Divine
Roast Vegetables with Rosemary
Infused Rice Bran Oil.
