Congratulations Judy!
|
| Good News! Our Judy has been
transformed into a GRANNY!! When you see Judy
next I guarantee that she'll (still) have
a big grin on her face, all thanks to the
arrival of little Emily Madison Monk. It is
truly a fabulous thing to become a Nana, but
sleeping with a Granddad - now that's hard
to come to terms with! Congratulations to
the Monk family from us all. |

Greetings,
We trust that you are keeping warm and
managing to avoid "Miss Piggy's Revenge" (Swine
Flu) sorry for the bad taste joke - couldn't resist
that one.
As
the weather is now colder we were thinking "Midwinter
Festival". Mid Winter Solstice festivals go
back millennium.
For many centuries man has been celebrating the festival
of the 'new sun' at the winter equinox, the time when
the sun path stops and reverses, heading again towards
summer.
When I think of Midwinter Fest it conjures
up pictures of a medieval scene. Imagine that you are
in the Great Hall, a roaring fire in the huge hearth,
raucous laughter and lots of people chatting and enjoying
each other's company.
The food arrives - Suckling Pig, Lamb
on a Spit, Boars Head, Stuffed Trout, Pheasant, and
Roast Goose Ooooh! Delicious - Wake UP!! Let's get real
- this is 2009. We may not be able to match that menu
but we can enjoy a modern day menu that is much easier
to prepare, influenced by Prenzel flavours and very
easy to share with friends.
We hope you'll enjoy our modern day kiwi
adaptation on the Mid Winter celebration, with simple,
and easy to make dishes for you to enjoy.

Seasonal veggies: Know your Onions
If
tears come to your eyes whenever you slice an onion,
you'll be glad to know that your tears are not shed
in vain. The very compounds that give onions their pungency,
taste and smell have been identified as substances that
may fight cancer. Scientists believe that onions and
other members of the Allium family, such as garlic,
leeks, chives and shallots, may be a significant dietary
factor by protecting us from certain forms of cancer.
There is hardly a savoury dish that doesnt include
onions or one of its relatives - white and red onions,
garlic, chives, shallots, spring onions and leeks.
