2010: Three International Competitions, six medals
Southern Star Vodka – 2 Gold
Lemon Zest Limoncello Liqueur – 2 Gold
Espresso Liqueur – 1 Silver, 1 Bronze
Hot on the heels of Gold medal win at the World Beverage Competition in Florida, Prenzel’s Limoncello and Southern Star Vodka were each awarded a gold medal at the World Spirits Awards (WSA) in Austria.
The celebrating hardly had time to wind down when yet another Gold award for Southern Star Vodka was announced at the Monde Selection in Brussels. It is also exciting that Espresso Premium Liqueur has secured Silver and Bronze medals but these awards have been rather overshadowed by the achievements of the relatively new Vodka and Limoncello.
Judges comments for the Limoncello liqueur included a “pure lemon juice fragrance, with an intense taste, a lot of freshness, delicate tartness and very stimulating full-bodies and lengthy finish”.
Southern Star Vodka has a “fresh style with a touch of citrus and mint, a stong body, somewhat edgy and stimulating”.
Prenzel CEO, Hugh Steadman, is not surprised by these awards and says that they are a testament to the very hands on nature of the process involved in the making of these products. “We source the very best ingredients, combined with our knowledge learned (often the hard way) from years of distilling similar products. Our expertise is making small runs of extremely good beverages with a kiwi take on them”.
Each of these competitions have strict judging criteria with the World Spirits Award specialists being trained from scratch by the WSA in order to even be considered to judge at the event.
Prenzel and the Austrian competition - World Spirits Awards - have connections from the past with Prenzel winning their first Gold medal in 1994 for Pear William eaux-de-vie Fruit Brandy, making them the first non European company to ever win Gold in Austria. Prenzel Kirsch Fruit Brandy also gained recognition that year being awarded Bronze. That was the start of a long list of international medals for the distillery.
