Prenzel Blenheim Bay Gin
The Secrets Within
Gin by law must contain juniper berries and has
also traditionally included coriander, angelica,
orange peel, lemon peel and licorice to temper
the flavour.
The exact number, type and quantities of the
botanicals used in any gin are usually a closely
guarded secret to ensure the originality of the
resulting product.
Prenzel has disclosed the use of eleven botanicals
in its Blenheim Bay Gin: Juniper berry oil, coriander
seed oil, angelica root oil, licorice extract,
sweet orange oil, bitter orange oil, elemi oil,
hyssop oil, orris root and lemon peel oil.
Elemi oil has a citrus-like smell, originates
from a tropical plant grown in Manila and is said
to rejuvenate the skin.
Hyssop is mentioned in the Old Testament where
the herb was used for purification. Already well
known in ancient times, it was referred to in
the Bible for its cleansing effect in connection
with plague, leprosy and chest ailments. Hyssop
oil gives a feeling of alertness and helps with
anxiety and fatigue.
Angelica root has sweetening properties, coriander
seed has antibacterial properties and cassia bark
is extracted from cinnamon bark and so has similar
taste and oral properties.
The use of both lemon and orange peel extract
add to the citrus top notes evident in Blenheim
Bay Gin. Gin has a close association with citrus
flavours and is often served with a slice of lemon
or lime.
Licorice extract adds a subtle aftertaste that
compliments the other botanicals used.
