Ti-toki Liqueur
Taste the Legendary Liqueur of New Zealand
Legend tells us that the magical people of Maori
folklore, the Patupaiarehe, warmed themselves
and toasted friendships with a drink distilled
from the berries of the Titoki tree. The potion,
it was said, captured the intensity and glow of
Aotearoa's hidden fires.
In the early 1970s an Auckland wine-maker decided
to create a uniquely New Zealand liqueur which
reflected the pungent, aromatic smells of the
New Zealand native bush. Soon there were bubbling
mixtures on the stove, and what started as a hobby,
grew into a three-year search for the right ingredients.
After a painstaking effort of trial and error
a suitable bouquet and flavour was found with
a mixture including Titoki, Kawakawa and Manuka
leaves. Producing a sustainable, commercially
viable Liqueur from purely natural ingredients
however was not feasible. So further painstaking
research followed before a combination of natural
extracts and essences were blended to produce
the uniquely New Zealand
"Ti-toki Liqueur".
To ensure Ti-toki retained a truly New Zealand
identity it was packaged in a hand-glazed ceramic
crock in the shape of a Tekoteko - the carved
figure that guards against evil spirits on the
top or in front of a Maori meeting house.
Ti-toki Liqueur is 100% made in New Zealand,
with the crocks made by Todd and Karuna in their
design studio just minutes from Muriwai Beach,
north-west of Auckland and the liqueur made in
Greenhithe in Auckland's upper harbour.
Ti-toki Liqueur is most often recognised by the
500ml
hand-made ceramic crock in the shape of a
"Tekoteko", the carved figure that guards
against evil spirits on the top or in front of
a Maori meeting house.
These make wonderful souvenirs and gifts and
some of the older versions have become sought
after collectors items... Ti-toki Liqueur is also
available in a stylish 500ml
glass bottle or in 50ml miniatures.
A good liqueur should unfold on the palate in
a series of taste sensations. While the first
taste of Ti-toki Liqueur reveals a certain texture
and warmth, it is followed by a deliciously smooth
sweet after-taste. The second, third and fourth
tastes unravel slightly different depths and sensations.
